The Peschels from Buckman

Most days lately, Larry and I 'instant message' about general fun stuff not related to HH--from birds to flea markets, crosswords to sledding on cardboard (grass opposed to snow), crazy religion, current affairs, ancient history, music, cats....and if something odd comes up in conversation, one of us googles it (squirrel habits, for instance) while the other pretends she knows what she's talking about.  This system is interesting, and it works.

But sometimes, out of the blue, somebody emails with pictures and facts to add to the blog.  I LOVE it! It feels like we're gradually re-building the family-web that was the little village of Buckman, Minnesota, before we were born.  No it's not of world importance, but it matters to a few of us descendants, and that's enough. 

It happened this week when Rick, whose mom was a Peschel, wrote to mention a connection to Buckman. (YAY, Rick!)  He said there were 10 kids in the John and Pauline (Koroll) Peschel family. Of the five daughters, two, Catherine (Sr Juliana) and Anna (Sr Alphonsus), became Franciscan sisters in Little Falls.  BTW, on her Find a Grave page, Sr Alphonsus worked at the St Cloud Orphanage. Rick's mom was Mary, there on the right.

Rick said, "There were a couple marriages with the Mischke clan.  My uncle Frank Peschel married Mary (Mayme) Otremba and Aunt Theresia married a Frederick Mueller from up that way." 

 I went looking for mentions of the family in the Pierz Journal and Little Falls Herald.  I found a blurb mentioning Theresa Peschel and Mamie Otremba, back in Buckman from the cities where they'd been working for six months. (There are a couple more, below).

 In the 1920 census, Paulina was the head of household after John's death, in 1919.

There were a few other mentions in the papers, tho it seems like the family stayed below Math Hesch's radar pretty well ☺
