See, it pays to do crossword puzzles incessantly. The clue was 59 down: "In or of the present month". A-ha! While we've seen "inst" used often on the Chronicling America website, we're usually so interested in the actual story reported that that small abbreviation is just a curiosity...but now we KNOW, and so do you ☺.Added much later:
... 15th inst. = the 15th of the current month ( short for instant)
... 15th ult. = the 15th of last month. (ultimo: Of last month)
... 15th prox. = the 15th of next month (proximo: of next month)
