I don't know where I found these maps, but I assume they're old. I'm posting them to give us all a reminder of what being from "Germany" meant on census records.
Paul Hesch (and probably his brother Mathias) left Europe about 1870, about when the second map was current.
They were considered "German" because they spoke it, even tho they were Austrians from Bohemia.
The Otrembas came from Silesia, which was considered Germany, too, even tho Polish people had lived there for ages.
