The New Midwestern Table: 200 Heartland Recipes...by Amy Thielen

Ok, if I owned a TV or paid closer attention to the Stearns History Museum's newsletter, this post might have been written last year. 

  

But it took till yesterday, when Larry was googling for new Hesch stuff online.  To his great surprise, he found this picture, from a book with a copyright of 2013:

Anyone in our family (as well as Larry) would recognize these seven women, right?  But here they were, "the seven Hesch sisters, Buckman, Minnesota" in a new cookbook.  Ahhh...it's written by Adeline's granddaughter, Amy Thielen.

One small addition to that recipe: Amy mentions that Addie judged her own bread partly by the characteristic 'pulling away in a spiral' of the finished loaf, but you'd only get that effect if you roll it up when you're forming the loaves.  Maybe Adeline skipped showing Amy that step, or like every excellent family cook, she omitted something so her bread really would always be the best!

The bread turned out beautifully (last night);  Of course one MUST try the crust right away (mmmm!), but I had to wait til it cooled to show you (this morning's breakfast toast).  

 I LOVE fresh bread, and especially when it's a wonderful family recipe.
