This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

The Sand-Hiemenz-Lewans Connection

Ok...a quick review--Mike Sand & Louisa Rausch had ten kids.  The oldest was Joseph, born in 1878.  Our grandma, Elizabeth, was born in 1888, the fifth kid was Angelica, born in 1884, and the second-last kid, Magdalena, was born in 1894.  Wanna know why I'm mentioning those four?  Ha! Read on ☺

This small pic is Joe at about 22 years old (about 1900).  He was still living at home then, but by  1911, he was married with two kids, and living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  He and Antonia Poser had four kids in all (Mary, Michael, Erwin and Agnes).  They made their home in Saskatchewan.
Their daughter Mary married Peter Lewans, and they had 12 kids, one of whom, Sylvester, became a priest.
------
Angelica Sand, Angie, married Joe Hiemenz in 1907, and their son Eddie was a good buddy to dad.  Eddie sent me these pics this week--this was on the occasion of a trip to Minnesota by Mary and Peter Lewans, and their son Sylvester in 1963.
See?  Here's a dinner at Eddie & Marcy's with Fr. Lewans on the left, then dad, Eddie, Mom, Marcy and, I assume, Peter and Mary facing away.
(I don't know who the other diners are).  Make sure to enlarge this one--it's good to see the parents enjoying themselves!

Now this pic is why I mentioned Lena up there...pictured left to right is Peter Lewans, Frank Sand, Lena (Sand) Block, Mary (Sand) Lewans, and Fr. Sylvester Lewans.  (Frank and Lena were the two youngest of Michael and Louisa Sand's brood.  Fr Lewans, then, was their great nephew).
(Wow, Mary looked like her mother...and married a man who looked like her father!)

THANKS for the corrections, Carolyn ☺!

Our connection to the Poser family

From the Brainerd Dispatch, August 16, 1963 in what must have been the "News from Pierz" column.  The first part doesn't ring any bells, but then familiar names pop up ☺.

A constant "open house" is being held at the H.G.Poser residence these days.  Their daughter, Mrs Barbara Short and son Terry made a 90 minute jet flight to Las Vegas, Nev. Tuesday after a ten day visit here.  They will visit the Felix Poser's and the Herman Britz' at Las Vegas before continuing home to Gardena, Calif. Mr and Mrs George Przybilla and Tom, Susan and Karen left Monday for their home in Milwaukee, Wisc. and Mr and Mrs Mike Sand from Saskatchewan, Can. are visiting at the Poser home now.  Other visitors include Mr and Mrs Charles Littlefield and two sons, Mason City, Iowa and Father Sylvester Lewans O.M.I., Faribault and Saskatchewan.  Father Lewans also visited Mr and Mrs Henry Block.

(Yup, the red edge means Larry found this ☺)

...So, the Mike Sand mentioned here was Joe Sand's son (grandma Lizzy's oldest brother Joe, who married Antonia Poser in 1908 and moved to Saskatchewan).  Mrs Henry Block was Lena, their sister, and Fr Lewans was/is Mike's grandson, ok?

Just so you don't loose sleep over this, here are two 'context' pics (damn, I'm GOOD to you!)

(Joe is the tall one in back. Photo c 1900.  Second pic: Fr Lewans with three of his Sand great aunts, S. Teresita, Lizzy, and S Severine, that summer of 1963).

YAY! The Canadian Sand family

WOW!  On Sunday, a new relative (new to us, anyway) emailed to say she's the great granddaughter of Joe Sand and Antonia Poser Sand, and she's excited to find HH online! ☺ Her name's Christa.
(Reminder: Joseph Sand was the eldest child of Mike Sand and Louisa Rausch Sand; he was grandma's brother who moved to Saskatchewan and never came back--or, Fr Lewans' grandpa, ok?).
So how, precisely, does Christa connect?  Joe and Antonia's daughter, Agnes, had a daughter named Brenda, who is Christa's mom, see?

Why YES, thanks for asking.  She did send pics ☺!
Here's Joe and Antonia on their 50th wedding anniversary in 1958,
with three of their four grown kids--Mary, Mike and Agnes.
The fourth, Erwin, who was adopted, evidently couldn't make it home for the shindig.

We have seen this photo b4--that's Mary and Peter Lewans, Mike and Rosa Sand and Wilfred and Agnes Grubbe with the cheery celebrants.
(Man, what a Sand trait, huh?  Joe didn't smile any more than Grandma did!)
So, this is Wilfred and Agnes Grubbe family at "David's wedding" in 1963.  They are David, Brenda, Anita, Rosemary, Phyllis, Lawrence and Edward behind Wilf and Agnes.
Cool, huh?

THANKS for this Christa.  I'm thrilled you found us!
