Two new places to look for old photos!

Someone at work told me about a really neat Facebook page called St Cloud Remembered...it's photos and stories about the early years of St Cloud, Minnesota.  'Course, it tickles me, and I had to go post a pic or two.  Poor Larry had to go look right away when he got online ☺ and before long, he wondered if we should do the same sort of thing for Morrison County?  We have hundreds of photos from the Morrison County Atlases that are unrelated to Heschs or Pierz or Buckman--it'd be a perfect place to post em and keep em from being forgotten.

The Doctor's Office

Dr. Edward Kerkhoff 's Office in Pierz--1904

 It's really cool for today's historians that people took pictures and dated them back in the day, particularly when the technology was new.  By 1904 it was no longer new, but only professional photographers owned cameras (or had darkrooms), so this sort of pic had to be arranged and paid for.  Hard to believe it was ever that way when we all carry around phones with cameras now, huh?

 So, where in this 1908 street view is that office and house?  Do you see it?

 These two photos were included in the 1970 Morrison County Atlas Historical pics section.  Evidently Mrs Kerkhoff and her sons stayed in Pierz after 

Ed died of Spanish Flu in 1918.

The Faust Family

I know it's a coincidence, but in the 12-12-12 issue of the Pierz Journal, the Faust name is mentioned 12 times in the paper.  Isn't that cool?

We're talking December 12, 1912, and the mentions consist of Clara, Joseph, Theresia and a cousin Joseph among the school kids who hadn't missed any days, but also, Andrew Faust who was the treasurer of Pierz village, and Frank Faust who was the fire chief and health officer in Pierz, and Nick who returned from a State Dairy school where he learned buttermaking, and F. Fausts Variety stores' Christmas specials, Andrew who was the agent for Kiewel Brewery and of course, an ad from John N Faust and his Bijou Theater.

 We don't know what year the photo below was taken, but John  died in 1905 (born in September 1825).  The family is all adult, so this was probably c 1890.  Looks like Anna Guerton Bares became a widow and married John Faust, a widower (?)  There are quite a few 'John Faust"s on FamilySearch and we're not close enough to distinguish among em.  Still, we can always add to what's here.


(With any luck,someone will search "Faust", find this post, and correct me if I'm wrong....and maybe ID the others or ad more photos?)

As we said a few posts ago, we think the Bijou was on the south end of Pierz, in Lower Town, kitty cornered across from the Journal office.  Most likely, Editor Bailey and Mr Faust realized that ads were mutually beneficial.  This plug for the Bijou was probably gratis, since Bailey was definitely a Pierz booster and wanted to encourage both the theater and continuing ad dollars.  On that point, he needn't have worried--when I searched FAUST within the PJs online, the engine found 509 issues out of 543.  That's amazing.

Here are two obits I failed to include originally--John J. Faust, who died in October, 1917, and that of Margaret Faust, wife of Joseph.  She would have been the next generation after John J's, and also, her husband was probably one of the Josephs listed in the second paragraph.  Larry found her obit in the Brainerd paper July 20, 1971.















As I find photos of families I've posted about, I try to add em.  It's a mish-mash, I know--as bad as the original Atlases, but at least they're together.

The Pierz Journal office

I'm sure you're consumed with curiosity about the Pierz Journal offices (AND I'm proud of your constraint in not begging for info in the comments).  

So, ok, here's what we have:

We think the Pierz Journal was published in the first white building on the left  in the "South Pierz" street view (looking north), below.  You'll notice a sign that says "Journal".  Well, that narrows it considerably.

This weekend, I was paging thru the Atlases again, because we've finally learned that just because we didn't notice something on the first go-round doesn't mean it's not there....

which is to say, "Hey, look what we found!"

 This pic was in the 1970 edition of the Atlas.  I'd love a photo of the editors' desk in the office part of the building, but till someone sends one, this will have to do.

A few days later:  LOOK what Larry found in the MNHS photo collection--we think it was taken in 1925 when an unknown photographer took photos of businesses in Morrison County (like creameries, banks, and the interiors of stores and saloons, but didn't name any of them).  The photo below is WAY clearer.  Just look at the crisp details--and we know it's the PIERZ JOURNAL. Yay!

More Morrison Co Atlas Pics

Flipping thru photos I saved from the atlases, I realize that quite a few are no relation to Heschs.  Instead,  they're familiar names or really cool old photos, or they're of families who submitted more than one pic (so we can compare faces to some extent).  I'll add a few here in the 'small' setting, but you can click any that interest you to enlarge, ok?
