Another Adam Hiemenz

Remember THIS post about Adam Hiemenz (1839-1924), the altar builder at Holy Angels in St Cloud?  He and his wife Rose Bolfing had four kids, one of whom was Joseph Hiemenz, who married Gramma Lizzy's sister Angie Sand....here's another son named Adam Frank Hiemenz (aka Eddie) and his wedding to Mary Ann Meyer.  I'm mortified to admit that I don't recall who sent it to me, but it needs a place here, even tho they made their home in St Cloud. They had eleven children and....wait, read Adam's obit, below.  My families' double connection to the Hiemenz family is mentioned there.

  

A.F. Hiemenz, Eddie's Market Founder, Dies. 
February 13, 1967


Adam F. (Eddie) Hiemenz, 86, founder of Eddie's Market here, died today. He had lived at 723 4 Ave. S. Mr. Hiemenz was a partner in Hiemenz and Rieter Grocery from 1905 until 1933. 

He worked for Warren Co., 1933-35, and Aug. 1, 1935 opened Eddie's Market, 115 7 Ave. S. Mr. Hiemenz was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Catholic Order of Foresters and St. Joseph's Society. 

He is survived by his widow Mary, and the following children: Herbert, Newport News VA; Mrs. C.V. (Alvina) Evans, Mercer Island WA; Mrs. Roy (Viola) Mallery, Palm Desert CA; Nestor, Mrs. Ed (Mercedes) Brandl, Mrs. George (Genevieve) Rosenberger, Roger, Roman and James, St. Cloud; Mrs. William (Lorraine) Travers, San Jose CA; Mrs. Vern (Rosemary) Vroman, Ingleside IL; Richard, Eden Valley MN; and Delroy, Warren MI. There are 53 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.  

A new "eight women" picture connection

 

When we finally figured out when this picture was probably taken, and why, we posted about it.  I was, of course, most interested in the five Sand women (Grandma, her sisters and mom) and the woman on the bottom right (most likely Charlie Sand's wife, here on a visit from Wenatchee,Washington).  We still don't know the woman with the pitcher, or the kneeling woman on the left, but we figured they were the cooks and servers for one of the three Hesch weddings that took place in 1920.

Then, when Chris sent the picture of Lena Dengel Mueller, I was thrilled, cuz now she fits, too ☺ See?
Added April, 2015:  Lena Sand Block's great grandaughter says the kneeling woman is most likely LENA--of course!  So I've changed the photo to include that ID.  Now, all we need is the name of the nectar-pourer ☺. Thanks, Jenny!

Look closely--mother Louisa is holding Angie's hand, and has her arm around Lena; Jenny mentioned that it might be little Hildegard, 

just out of the picture next to her mom on the left.

Adam Hiemenz built an altar...

A few weeks ago, a Q came up on facebook: Which Hiemenz built the altar for the Cathedral church in St Cloud?  Eddie said it was his grandfather Adam (1839-1924).   "Adam moved into town in 1896 and started work on the church". Cool, but the timing is off, as well as which church was meant.

You probably know all this already since early St Cloud church history is so exciting to both our readers, but let me lay it out again in case someone strays in here, m'kay?

According to the 1915 article below, Immaculate Conception (the German Church) was dedicated in 1865.  It stood on the corner of 9th and St Germain till it burned down in 1920. Chances are it already had a fine serviceable altar in 1896.
(Excerpts from the History of Stearns County, Mitchell, 1915)  

 The other church in St Cloud in those years was Holy Angels, the pro-cathedral (meaning it was temporarily serving as the cathedral, but that honor hadn't been bestowed for sure, even tho it lasted for 60 years).  
This is the church on the campus of Cathedral High School, on 6th Ave N.  It was a beautiful, top heavy church on the river bank which added even more height.  The sentence below--"The erection of the vicariate into a diocese in 1889 brought a change"--meaning Immaculate Conception parish over on St Germain was divided, sending some families to Holy Angels according to where they lived in St Cloud.
But read on....Holy Angels was "still poorly furnished" in 1890, and Fr Bernard Richter fixed that.  I believe the altars below were the altars that Adam Hiemenz built in the pro-cathedral, Holy Angels.  Isn't that COOL?

(BTW, I spoke with a native Hungarian speaker yesterday and mentioned this story and the name Hiemenz.  He said in Germany (and Europe), the name would be pronounced Hymans, rather than He-menz.  Hmm!)

September, 2015--Remember the name Raymie Hiemenz?  A friend and cousin of dad's, he was a face we would have recognized from family gatherings.  He was Eddie's brother, son of Grandma's sister Angie.  This morning, Raymie's son Tom emailed (Tom identified the kids in a photo for us in 2011) to add a photo he had of his great grandparents, Adam & Rose Hiemenz.  With the miracle of online photo editing software, Tom added color to the photo (and glasses for Adam ☺)--isn't it cool?  (Adam died in 1924 so this was early last century). Wow!

The Sand-Hiemenz-Lewans Connection

Ok...a quick review--Mike Sand & Louisa Rausch had ten kids.  The oldest was Joseph, born in 1878.  Our grandma, Elizabeth, was born in 1888, the fifth kid was Angelica, born in 1884, and the second-last kid, Magdalena, was born in 1894.  Wanna know why I'm mentioning those four?  Ha! Read on ☺

This small pic is Joe at about 22 years old (about 1900).  He was still living at home then, but by  1911, he was married with two kids, and living in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.  He and Antonia Poser had four kids in all (Mary, Michael, Erwin and Agnes).  They made their home in Saskatchewan.  

Their daughter Mary married Peter Lewans, and they had 12 kids, one of whom, Sylvester, became a priest.

Angelica Sand, Angie, married Joe Hiemenz in 1907, and their son Eddie was a good buddy to dad.  Eddie sent me these pics this week--this was on the occasion of a trip to Minnesota by Mary and Peter Lewans, and their son Sylvester in 1963. 

See?  Here's a dinner at Eddie & Marcy's with Fr. Lewans on the left, then dad, Eddie, Mom, Marcy and, I assume, Peter and Mary facing away.

 (I don't know who the other diners are).  Make sure to enlarge this one--it's good to see the parents enjoying themselves!

Now this pic is why I mentioned Lena up there...pictured left to right is Peter Lewans, Frank Sand, Lena (Sand) Block, Mary (Sand) Lewans, and Fr. Sylvester Lewans.  (Frank and Lena were the two youngest of Michael and Louisa Sand's brood.  Fr Lewans, then, was their great nephew).

(Wow, Mary looked like her mother...and married a man who looked like her father!)

Angeline Sand Hiemenz 1884-1963

Last week, I got a whole set of Hiemenz family photos from Angie's granddaughter, Renee.  (Angie, to refresh your memory, was grandma Lizzy's sister.  In the sepia family pic, Lizzy's the kneeling kid in front).  While I can't identify most of the people in em, we love figuring stuff like this out ☺. 

I don't recall grandma smiling much, but it looks like Angie did, alot, and her family seemed to be enjoying themselves in most of the pics.  We'll pop them in posts as we figure out names, but here are a few cool pics of Angie and Joe Hiemenz and family:

A Hiemenz question

Today I had a chance to talk with Marcy and Eddie Hiemenz again, and, with this photo in mind, I asked if one of Marcy's sisters had married one of Eddie's brothers?  

Yes, Marcy said, her oldest sister Eleanor married Eddie's brother Herman.  Oops!  That's not these two...but Josephine was a Czech, just like Marcy, and Victor is definitely Eddie's brother. Doesn't she look like Marcy, too?

   Couple weeks later, we got a note from this couple's daughter, Renee-YAY!  She said Josephine is Marcy's cousin, so no wonder they look so similar ☺.  Renee mentioned this photo of the Martin Czech family and said her grandpa is Michael, one of the sons in that pic, and Marcy's dad (Frank or Pete) is there too.

More pictures from the Pictorial Atlas!  These were gleaned from all three issues and the connection is Angelina SAND, grandma Lizzy's sister. Yeah, I think that's Lizzy as Angie's bridesmaid, in 1906.
The photo on the right is enlarged from the family portrait below.  Joe died in 1951 when he was 68, so this inset was taken in the 40s, most likely.




The family group picture was taken at a wedding, I bet.  Leona is wearing a hat and corsage, and the guys are all wearing suits...did one of Leona's kids get married in the 1960s?  That was probably the day ☺. Alfred's pic is the inset, made larger.

Odds and Ends, Redux

Here we are again with a batch of stuff gleaned from the web--items that I've kept in my files but that really don't need a whole post of their own.  Still, they're all interesting, honest!  I'll do captions, ok?

The old woman here is Angelica (Angie) Sand Hiemenz, our grandma's sister.
The guy is definitely her son, but which one?  I'd guess the kids are her grands--
does anyone know which ones?
Much later--Hooray!  According to Raymie Hiemenz' son Thomas, they are:
"Betty Juetten on Grandma's lap, Virginia Juetten on Uncle Alfred's lap 
and Jimmy Juetten sitting on the chair".
Angie and Joe's  daughter Leona married Nicholas Jutten, so these were her kids.

I was looking for Montgomery Ward catalogs on Internet Archive.  I found a couple,
but also this baseball  "how-to" book from 1888 by John Montgomery Ward.
Just thought it was cool.

This was also 1874--but just look what towns were the biggies in Benton Co. then.

THIS air photo tickles me!  It's Buckman township in 1955.
Just look at the natural drainage system--and, is that lake still there?
(No, the other air pics here on HH were from 1939--stop whining!)

Hmm....were these two pictures of the same house in Buckman?  It's the house kitty-cornered from the church.  We know they've both been labeled "the doctor's house".  Does anybody know for sure?

This is a photo of the cabin on my son's land, but it struck me  as
 being exactly the way our ancestors' cabins looked.
This one was built in 1880, but in Hennepin Co.

The hill south of Center Valley

I had a chat with Eddie Hiemenz yesterday, and he told me about how he and his buddies would ride their bikes to Jake Kinzer's store in Center Valley.  (Eddie was born in 1927, so this memory is probably from about 1940 or so).  He said Jake promised the boys a free ice cream cone if they could start by the store and ride all the way to the top of the south hill without stopping.
OMG.
I asked if any of them ever made it, and Eddie said he didn't think so, but Mr Kinzer eventually gave them cones anyway.  It probably made Jake tired just watching them try...lol

GOOD music!

Yesterday, I had a chance to see a band that plays ♪♫ just for FUN!  This is Eddie Hiemenz and friends, who play once a month at an Assisted Living nearby.  (Eddie is dad's cousin--their mothers were sisters).  I'm pretty sure they play at other nursing homes around the area, too.  That's Ed, playing the squeezebox in this song--he brings 4-5 instruments along, and picks up a different one depending on the key of each song.

Yup, they play harmonica, too ☺.  The residents absolutely love 'em--they play a mix of 40s tunes, waltzes and polkas.  It's a room full of old toes tapping!
