This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Sweet, Sweet Corn!

If you're craving some fresh, picked-this-morning sweet corn from Buckman, now's the time.  The Janson kids parked the stand across from the church again, and the next generation of kids is getting involved.
Damn, this makes me smile!

Shirley sent pictures!

Our cousin Shirley wants us to know that she's finally retired ☺.  One of the jobs she intended to do when she retired is to go thru Uncle Tader's Army trunk.  Evidently, it was where stuff (pictures, mostly) got stored over the years, and so I got a handful of photos in the mail last week--woohoo!
Summer, 1948--Mom holding Lois, dad, aunt Eileen, Uncle Matt, uncle Leo and uncle Tony and ?with Bev and Carol in front.  WHY was UT holding someone's shorts up to his waist, huh?
No, I have NO IDEA what they were doing on the right with
uncle Blaise, uncle Leo and uncle Tony.  Look away.
That's aunt Katie (standing, left) with one of her kids, and mom sitting.
Must have been hot that day--the kids are mostly wearing diapers or bathing suits.

July, 1960--One of the occasions where uncle Tader & aunt Millie came for a visit--
Me, Tommy, Mom and dad caught unaware at 1004.

Dad, being silly!  This may have been the same day as the top 2 pics, I dunno.
The back says:
Oh, and one more pic before I go to bed...from September 28th, 1946:
Tony Hesch, Reinhard Janson, Mike and Linda Hesch, Jeanette Marshik and Rosie Hesch.
Sweet, huh?

THANKS, Shirley!!

Sometimes, it pays to write....

On mom's side of the family: Her father was named Anton, too, just like dads' father, so we took to calling them "Little Grandpa" (Janson) and "Big Grandpa" (Hesch).
Little Grandpa was one of 8 children (4 girls and 4 boys). Of the girls, Rose and Frances married, while Anna and Sophia became nuns: Sophia was born in Germany (1875), and became Sr. Lazara, and Anna was born in Minnesota (1883), and became Sr. Kunigunda.

They belonged to the Franciscan Sisters in Campbellsport, Wisconsin, so I emailed the contact person on their website. In a few days, I received an envelope with these photos from the 1930s, and their birth, first vows, final vows, and death dates. Sr Lazara was a homemaker and died at 78 years old in 1954, while Sr Kunigunda was a teacher and died at 90 in 1973.
They're buried at the Sisters Cemetery in Campbellsport, Wisconsin.

St Michael's School, Buckman, Minnesota

This was the first St Michaels school, built in 1887, and this was the first class. It was located where the church is now. Click the picture to enlarge it, and the one below, too, of just the people.
MINNESOTA REFLECTIONS

I've numbered this photo, because I'm pretty sure my other Grandpa (Anton Janson) is #19. He's the right age and his grandsons looked like #19 at the same ages...lol
(If your ancestor/relative was born between about 1874 (oldest kids) and about 1881 (youngest), and lived in Buckman, look closer...s/he might be HERE!)
Added:
Sue thinks #8 is Ket (Catherine Mueller, born 1880), and I expect two of the boys were Joseph and John Sand...

This is what the school looked like until it was torn down in 2012 (?).  Now it's just a blank space behind that big house on the corner.  Kids from Buckman attend school in Pierz:

....
"The village of Buckman is located six miles south of the city of Pierz. In 1887, a parochial school was opened. When this building no longer met their needs, a two-room schoolhouse was built on the ground where St. Michael’s Church is located. In 1901, Fr. William Lange, decided to build a church where the school resided. The school was moved across the highway from the present church. Later, a four-room school was erected to replace the previous school, because it had become inadequate. In the 1950’s, four more classrooms and bathrooms were added to the structure".
...
(From the Pierz Holy Trinity website that no longer works).

Evidently, 1990 saw the end of St Michael's in Buckman.
But, THIS was 1939:
#3, Margaret (1921), daughter of John Dehler and Margaret Zenner;

#4, Irene (1924), daughter of Math Hesch and Mary Tetiva;

#6, Rosie (1925), daughter of Anton Hesch and Elizabeth Sand;

#12, Richard (1925), son of August B Dehler and Regina Hortsch.

(BTW, mom started high school in Buckman, and she said they offered Freshman and Sophomore classes in alternate years, so she was a Sophomore first, in 1932....making '39 a Freshman year...lol)

Do you recognize any others here? Let me know and I'll add the names.

1910 Federal Census for Buckman

Click this image--you'll see Grandpa Anton (Anthony) HESCH at 26, living at home with his widowed mom, and the Michael SAND family, including Elizabeth at 21. The date was the 19th of April, exactly 99 years ago today--wow!
(For my sibs: there's the Joseph Janson family, too (mom's grandparents) with son Anton (Anthony), her dad).
Pretty cool, huh?
