This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Whew, Skunk!


This is from "Fins, Feathers and Fur", Minnesota Game and Fish Commission, Game and Fish Dept...Published in 1923.
Google has them digitized from 1916 to 1930 so far. It must have been a magazine published quarterly, since this is from the Oct, Nov, Dec 1923 edition.

I imagine Skunk "hunting" was actually getting rid of vermin in the chicken coop, but still, Paul had to pay an outlandish sum. And, for heaven's sake, there was a skunk hunting SEASON??

(Checking my tree, this had to be John's son--Grandpa Anton's nephew--Paul).

    It seems that Paul's high fine might be because a judge might see trapping skunk as an out of season fur-trapping violation. Skimming the fines that were given out back then, it looks like the highest ones were reserved for folk who were involved in animal furs and pelts.
    This was income-producing stuff and the gummint wanted it's cut.
