This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

It's all relative...

Something that surprises me about our Minnesota Hesch family is what homebodies they were, there on the west side of Buckman. I used to think we were related to most everyone in Buckman--but in the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses, there are quite a few unfamiliar names, mostly north, east and south of town. This extends to neighboring communities, too. Genola and Pierz were closest, but they might as well have been in Wisconsin for all the connection we had with them. Why?

BTW, did you know that the town of New Ulm, Minnesota was begun by a group of German people who were sick to death of the religious in-fighting in Europe? They specified that there would be NO churches in New Ulm, and NO lawyers. It actually lasted that way for over a hundred years, I believe.

I was thinking that Buckman was set up by and for German Catholics. Even in the 1970's there were no non-Catholics living there. But neighboring towns HAD other faiths--Pierz, Royalton, Rice, Little Falls--all had many churches and religions. Was that it?

Anyway....it's to think about.
......

This morning, from Sue:

" This is a page from an Abstract of Title that started out recording information on land (10 acres) owned by John Sitzman in 1880.

This page is part of the history to incorporate the town of Buckman. A document A-9 is referenced with pages 253 and others that would contain a census and the actual signatures of the towns people of Buckman at that time. Wonder where this document resides?"

Just LOOK at all the familiar names there--it was the summer of 1903--they were making it official. I expect the other part the document is in Little Falls, or St Paul?

And...how did Sue get one measley page of it?? LOL...read the comment!

  1. sorry, I have the entire abstract. This was the most interesting page. But I would still like to find the documents it references. I asked my realtor friend if she could find out.
