This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

More about Schmolkes...

I don't know why we keep encountering the Schmolke name online--I don't think theres a Hesch relationship involved--but as an 'old' family in Buckman, they're part of the story. Also, I suspect MR. RESEARCH googled the name...lol
This feel-good news photo was from 1945. Army nurses celebrating a birthday. The woman on the left is Cecelia Schmolke, daughter of John Schmolke, from Buckman, Minnesota. Pretty cool, huh?
But then....Larry found this tragic ending. From 3 March, 1945...Dinjan, India...the C-47 cargo plane she was in was "attempting to land, made a low turn and crashed".
Those who died are listed here...
Of the birthday photo women, Cecelia Schmolke and Margie Camper died in the crash.

How odd to feel sad about something that happened 64 years ago to people I didn't know...

  1. Brings a smile to my face (all these Buckman memories) and a tear to my eye (Aunt Cecelia's death in WWII), as I review your postings on the Schmolke family!! I stumbled across this by accident, but what a treat!! Happy to share more Schmolke and/or related info. My wife has been doing genealogy since before we married in 1977. Thanks for sharing this and look forward to maybe sharing more!!

  2. Hello, Tim! I'm delighted the name was finally found by a Schmolke!

Your family was such a big part of Buckman history, (and in fact Morrison history because of John's WPA work) that I have to say THANK YOU, and anything you'd want to share is welcome, for sure ☺.
My email address is up there on the left--I'd love to hear more--YAY!!
