This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Illustrations from Bohemia

On the wonderful website STATE REGIONAL ARCHIVES of TREBON, there's something called Verdute, which must mean Illustrations, since the pictures there are from widely varying sources: atlases, letterheads, history and story books, maps, and probably publicity pamphlets.  There are city views of Prague, New Orleans, 'Pariz', Hamburg, Lisbon, Neuhaus, 'Jeruzalem'....pretty much any important city they knew of in the world.  The earliest I found was 1611.

Don't miss crusing thru these.  Some are incredibly beautiful, especially when you realize they were hand drawings and most were done to show how idyllic THIS place was!

    Most of these are engravings, like our paper money, so, on the original site ifd any particular thing catches your attention it is possible to zoom way up close and get a sense of the incredible detail these national treasures contain.
