This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Otrembas in North Dakota

This spring, we were casting about the internet looking for family names, when Larry found this obit for Mary Jendro Otremba.  How did she fit?

She'd married Charles Otremba, according to the write-up, but I had no idea who he was other than "Otrembas are related."   So, we just saved it, knowing we'd eventually find the connection.

It turns out that Charles was also known as Karl, and they left Minnesota in 1906...no wonder I have no family references to them.  Karl was the son of  Johann Otremba and Anna Rosina.  (Anna Rosina is one of our family mysteries--we have no idea how she fits in the family or who her parents were  We found more about her HERE!).

Anyway, last night, Larry searched ancestry.com for Mary Jendro and there she was, with pictures, and how they fit in the family.

A photo of Mary and Charles in 1942, and a newspaper article about their daughter as an old woman adds to bits and pieces we've found online:

Below, there's an obit for Edward Sherman, who was this Mary (Mamie)'s husband.  The other obit about the Golden Valley, ND man, was Mary Jendro's brother....

The photo of John and Rose Otremba (added June 2010) is from a Morrison County Farm Directory in the 1980s.  He was the son of Joseph and Susan (Jendro) Otremba. (Thanks for the correction, Wendy ☺ )

I wish I could have visited Mamie at the hardware store ☺
Two photos added in November 2014: With Thanks to Debby!

Here's a map of where Golva and Alpha are in ND...no wonder obits were published in the Billings newspaper.
Bits and pieces that eventually fit together.....

  1. I'm doing some casual family tree research and was pleased to find this! Mamie Scherman was my great-grandmother. I vaguely have memories of receiving gifts from the Grandma Mamie's hardware store. :) Thanks for posting!

  2. COOL, Breann ☺ There's a lot more about Otrembas here, too. The family's huge--my tree has 124 Otrembas, and that's not all by far!
I'm glad you found HH, too. Your branch of the family is kind of lost to us here in Minnesota, so if you have any stories or pics to share, let me know, ok? My email address is in the left column.
