This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Who was Martin Hesch?

Here's a record from 1897, found in the Baptismal Register at St Joseph's Church, Pierz, Minnesota.

This page is intriguing because, while it shows the child's father to be from OBERSCHLAG, BOHEMIA, we don't know who Martin Hesch was, or how he was related to Paul.  Most likely a cousin?
We found a Martin Hesch living in Agram township (Little Falls) in the 1885 US Census, and Larry found land records in his name, but so far, we haven't connected him.  His wife was Mathilda NELLES, born in St Michael, Minnesota--does anybody know more about these people?

Heinz wrote to remind me that Paul Hesch's GRANDFATHER was Martin, back in Oberschlagles!  With German naming traditions, it'd make sense that this mystery Martin was probably a close relative.  Not a brother to Paul, Mathias and Anton tho, because in the 1900 census, Marya said she'd had 5 children, and 3 were living. Hmm!
