This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Cathedral High School, St Cloud, Mn

This 1946 photo postcard just blows me away.  It's from 20 years before I was a student at CHS, and while a lot changed in those years, it's startling how much was exactly like this when I got there.  LOL...I could go on to describe each building, but only 3 of you would care.
Compare and contrast in the comments, ok?

  1. Noob, see how fancy that priest's house was? Oh, and it turns out I goofed on the FIRST bishop..it was Seidenbush, and Zardetti was second.
BTW, what did we call the house behind Holy Angels school? I think it was used by a different brand of priest/teachers at CHS...but did we have Jesuits?
Thinking about MLK day and integration--for us, it would have meant boys and girls in the SAME room, with a male lay teacher, or one of those "other" priests!

  2. When we went to school, there were TORs, that is, Third Order of Francis, and they were brothers, not priests. We called that building the rectory. I got a sick feeling in my stomach remembering walking to phy ed between that building and the gym wing. Ick. But that was originally the bishop's mansion, no? I visited my friend, Brother Giles there, and it was fancy schmancy. Later I believe they may have let Catholic Worker house homeless people there, but that may be blending two visits. My two cents. 3. Ok, so the TORs lived in the big house (top right) of the picture? And the priest-teachers lived in the fancy house between the North and Central buildings, right? (lol...or the other way around?)

Yeah, that fancy house with the balcony over the door used to make me smile when I thought of Zardetti's "flock" gathered in that little tarred space between the buildings.
    LOL...I hated Phy Ed too!
    Thanks ☺!

  4. Yah, so the TORs (Franciscans, Third Order Regular) lived in the house behind the Holy Angels building the upper right corner of the picture. There were brothers (like Brother Giles) and priests (like Father Gordian who was principal or something for awhile before he ran off with one of the nuns) just like the Benedictines at St. Johns. The diocesan priests like Father Hahn and Father Lakey lived in the old bishop's house. I think the parish priests of Holy Angels lived there too. I seem to remember that there were other people (like homeless or Catholic Worker volunteers) living in the TOR house after a while. It may be that they moved the TORs to the Holy Angels rectory when everything went to hell in the early 70's. Well after my time, I might add, and therefore not my fault.

Gotta go save suffering humanity -

  5. Marlys - what do you mean by the integration and stuff? Tell me more about that?

  6. I was using the word "integration" in a pre-1960's, Catholic, central-Minnesota way--Cathedral High School, when I was a student, was segregated by gender, so there was Girls' English 4 and Boys' English 4...Girls' Biology 2 and Boys' Biology 2, etc. Plus, the Girls' classes were taught by nuns, while the Boys' classes were taught mostly by the brothers or priests. I learned years later that a few classes WERE integrated tho--like Psychology 4 and some of the Art classes. There were no 'students of color' at CHS then unless someone had Ojibwe blood and didn't talk about it.
