This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Mischke Hardware Store, Buckman, 1925

Wow, I just searched the blog so far--I haven't posted the picture of the store interior c. 1925.  Anon identified it for sure as Frank Mischke's Hardware store, which stood at the intersection a block north of the church (the four corner businesses then were the bank, Mischkes, Joe Janson blacksmith and Schmolke/Hartman/Britz grocery store).

The camera here was looking north west (store windows were facing south east, I believe), and Anon says  Frank Jr is the second man from the left.  I probably have the years mixed up, but according to the censuses, there was a merchant in Buckman named Frank Mischke who was born in 1862 in Germany.  In the 1905 census, he and Anna Mischke were listed with a 9 year old son named Frank.
In 1920, that son is 23, and his mom is head of household (and also owner of the Hardware store). Soooo, the man pictured above is 28-year-old Frank Jr?  Must be.
But here's an anomoly: regarding the Mueller hardware and bar that was originally on that corner--we have a photo of it that was supposed to be in 1917, but we also found a clipping saying "Joe Weisbrick now has the Mischke Hardware Store finished" in December, 1916. (Knowing Math Hesch, that comment could easily have been a joke about Joe Weisbrick finishing stuff on time.  Math danced with liable suits pretty often, I think).

Didn't they occupy the same corner?

Well, no, actually.  Here's a missive from Anon this morning:

The windows faced EAST.  The building was south of the old Mueller Bros. Grocery and Saloon - the former 1st Frank J. Mischke, Sr. buildings.  The older bldgs. were constructed around 1890, and the NEW Mischke Hdwe. was constructed by 1910. The former or older one stood on the lot currently occupied by Herb Britz car garage and home.  So mystery solved.   That is Frank, Jr. in the photo, since his dad died by 1914, leaving a young Frank to learn the business rather quickly.

DAMN, I love a good solved mystery! ☺

THANKS, Anon!

  1. I was hot on your trail......but somethings are not adding up. My ggg Grandfather is a Frank Mischke. He was born in Germany in 1862. Wife named Anna (maiden Topfer). I do not have them in MN but where they died in Yakima, WA. I also do not have a Frank Jr. Trying to read through and see if it's the same one.

  2. Hi, SB!
Your Mischkes came from the village of Wisbuhr, near Koszlin, Poland, up near the Baltic. It was considered Prussia at the time they left.

The info came from JewishGen Gazetteer, online. My Mischkes came from near Opole, Poland. Who knows if they were related? Franz was a very popular name, then, but I'm sure our two Franks are NOT the same person at all ☺

    Thanks for commenting!
