This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Axel and his Dog, 1955

LOL...a dog names Towser and a cat named Talulah (who were each only a paw and a voice), and later, a nurse named Car-mine...these were Axel's cohorts in the treehouse, on Minneapolis' WCCO when we were kids.  We thought he was incredibly funny, but dad caught way more than we did, and often laughed in places we didn't.
In these two clips, you'll notice Axel taking his spyglass down to look thru it--that always meant it was time for a cartoon.  And Axel always ended his show with "Birdie with the jello bill"...a Robert Louis Stevenson poem, but Axel changed the last line to a bad pun.  THIS is humor!

(Thanks to the Bulletin Board column from the St Paul Pioneer Press this morning.  I wasn't aware that any episodes of Axel were still around.  Truly, he formed a good part of our senses of humor--ok, mine at least ☺)
