This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

What Was There?

Wow--there's a fabulous new program online that's based on Google Earth/Maps--you can add old photos to the current map to show how the place used to look. As Larry observed, this is right up our alley.

My first addition was the picture of the local boys playing war games in 1940 in Pierz....and now, they're back in front of Hartmanns. ☺  There's a slider on the vintage photo so it can be faded, too.

'Course, not all family photos were taken from the street, so alignment can be a little wonky, but one street view from Royalton lined up perfectly.  Gawd, this is so much FUN!

WHATWASTHERE?
Go, try it!

THANK YOU, Larry!!

  1. I tried it and had fun with it, especially in places that I know. I tried New York and Chicago, and there were alot of pictures already there. None for Winona, few for St. Cloud. Better get cracking!

  2. LOL...give me time! I love watching how many pics are added every day, and how many were actually taken from aprox. the same viewpoint as Streetview.
What a perfect toy for us, huh?
