The Joys of Farm Life

(Humorous doggerel from Extension Agent Magazine in 1921-1922:)

Old Adam was a farmer in Paradise with Eve,
When she ate a wormy apple and the family had to leave.

They found a little homestead and stopped to pray for rain,
But instead of raisin' crops there they started raisin' Cain.

And after 'while came Able and he went to herdin' sheep,
But Cain got sore and slew him causin' Mother Eve to weep.

Thus trouble started early in the history of man,
And farmin' was the business on which the world began.

Adam kept on farmin' till the sweat run down his face,
And Eve she raised the children, till they proved up on the place.

Now there we have a story of six thousand years ago,
But modern farmin's different, as we all are sure to know.

Off to college now they send 'em for the scientific dope,
And they come back with power farmin' as the modern farmers hope.

With the tractor for the field work and a truck to pull the loads,
Adam markets whoppin' grain crops over solid concrete roads.

Eve and electricity can make the housework hum,
While daughter switches on the juice, to make the butter come.

Yes the time is drawin' nigher when the Apple of the Fall,
Will become the Fruit of Knowledge and the farmer'll know it all.

Then the joy of rural livin' will be heaven here below,
For the man that's power farmin' will be runnin' the hull show.
