This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Louis T. Gottwalt

Since my pickup needs a new starter and I'm waiting till Fleet Farm opens, I thought I'd do a post on pics I found in the Atlases of dad's first cousin Louis T. Gottwalt:
(This is Louis E Gottwalt,
Who married Rose Hesch
in 1895...)
...and this is their son, Louis T. Gottwalt,
born in 1902.

Louis T. Gottwalt (right) married Marie Eisenschenk from Cold Spring, Mn. in 1928. They lived in Pierz and owned Gottwalt Lumber, so the pics below make sense. Looks like Louis built small windmills when he retired. I wonder--did his family appreciate them more than we appreciated dad's SOBin' planters and tables?

PIERZ -- Marie Gottwalt, 99, Pierz, died Tuesday, May 28, 2002, at Pierz Villa.
Marie was born June 22, 1902, near Cold Spring to Michael and Caroline Eisenschenk. She was a 1919 graduate of the St. Cloud Business College. She married Louis T. Gottwalt on Oct. 3, 1928, in Cold Spring. They lived in Pierz and owned and operated Gottwalt Lumber Co., for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph's Church in Pierz where she was active in the Christian Mother's Society and the Dioceson Council of Catholic Women. She held various office and board positions in those organizations. She was active in Boy Scout programs, often serving as den mother for Cub Scout packs. She moved to Country Manor apartments and lived there until entering St. Mary's Villa in November 1999.
Survivors include two sons, Louis Gottwalt, Shoreview, and Edward Gottwalt, Pierz; five daughters, Mary Jo Loscheider, Pierz, Virginia Haines, Mountain Homes, Ark., Margaret Murphy, Hemet, Calif., Linnea Sakry, Rice, and Kathleen Weiss, McAllen, Texas; 30 grandchildren; and 60 great-grandchildren.
Her husband; a son, Virgil Gottwalt; four sisters; and three brothers died earlier.

  1. Dear Larry and Maryls,
Thank you for your work on this piece of Hesch history. My name is David Louis Gottwalt, son of Virgil L. Gottwalt and grandson of Louis T. Gottwalt. It's neat to see the old photos of my grandfather's windmills. I remember my dad and my uncle, Louis M., putting up one of his windmills in our backyard in the Twin Cities while the rain poured. Where do you live? I would have to think a bit to figure out how I am related to you.

  2. Hello, David, I'm so glad you found the blog! There's a list of labels on the left that includes 9 posts about Gottwalts, to give you more info, including a post called "Making sense of a photo 84 years later..." THAT one will interest you especially.
We're related because your great grandmother was Rose Hesch and her brother Anton was my grandfather, so our 'common ancestors' were the immigrants Paul & Mary Hesch. Nice to meet cha!
    Marlys
PS: If you have stories or photos to include here, send em, ok ? There can be lots more GOTTWALT labels over there ☺.

  3. This comment arrived in my email but didn't show up here:
"My name is Katherine Marie Gottwalt, daughter of Steven Gottwalt, son of Virgil Gottwalt. Louis was my great-grandfather and I remember Great-grandma Marie and was an altar server for her funeral. I married a Popp and currently live in Buckman township. Fun to run across information about my relatives!"

  4. Howdy. I am Brian Weiss. Son of Kathy Gottwalt daughter of Louts T. I remember the windmills as a kid. I now look much like grandpa Gottwalt. I see him in the mirror sometimes.

  5. Hi, Brian, I've always lived within 40 miles of Pierz (still do), and I recall seeing windmills in yards as a kid. Were they Gottwalt windmills? I dunno, but I believe they were. ☺

    1. Hello, Marlys, I am Louis T. Gottwalt's youngest daughter, Kathleen. This is the first time I have seen this blog. I accidentally came upon it.
I LOVE IT. And would love to learn more about the many relatives I do NOT know, or remember. Being the youngest, I did not know all my distant cousins and relations on my dad's side of the family. I am now 74 yrs old, and live in San Antonio, Texas. Moved here in 2012 from McAllen, Texas. We had a business in McAllen, and retired to San Antonio after over 35 yrs. in business designing and making Custom Made Draperies.

    2. Hi, Steve, The note right above yours was written in July, 2018, so I doubt "Unknown" checks here for answers. I don't have a copy of the 16mm film, but you should be able to figure out who the writer was, and contact him some other way. Pictures are SO COOL!

  10. My pics were all dumped out and mixed up, by my grandson. I still have to sort through them, and maybe send you some more pictures of my dad and others. My time is so full of many things to do with the grandson being home during the Covid virus.
