This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Nicholas Sand 1834-1912

A quote from a wonderful pdf* that Larry found online: (The bold line refers to our Sand line thru Elizabeth, who was Peter's granddaughter, ok?)

"Paul Sand (Nicolas's half brother) was the first to come to America. He left his homeland in 1850 and settled in New York. In 1857 his oldest brother, Peter, arrived in America with his wife, Angelique, and four children. In about 1859 Paul left New York, probably with Peter, and made his way west. Paul Sand and his wife Katharina along with their small son Nick Paul settled near St. Joseph, MN. Peter Sand and his family settled near Sartell, MN. In about 1865 Nicolas Sand joined his half-brothers in America and eventually settled near Meire Grove, MN".

Nicholas married Christine Jacquemain when he was 33 and she was 25.  Just guessing why this photo was taken--maybe their 30th anniversary because of his white beard--then this would have been 1897 when he was 63. I still think that beard was actually a white kitten tucked under his chin.

The booklet's called "Dwellers near a Stream: a genealogy of the descendants of Anna Sand and Hubert Stephan Welle".  It's a pdf and takes awhile to download...be patient for a change, ok? ☺
