This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

The very short life of the Buckman Athletic Association

January 1913

"The boys of Buckman had a meeting last Monday for the purpose of organizing an athletic association.  The price to join was fixed at $1.00.  The money will go towards buying boxing gloves, punching bags and a wrestling mat.  The village hall can be used for awhile. The boys all agreed that the first big purse won against one of the "White Hopes" or Jack Johnson will go toward building a hall of their own".
February 1913

"Well, our punching bag is here and put up.  Frank Mischke got the first prize for the fastest hitter.  He can make them hum.  Any one that wants to take a share, come now."

This is not one of ours ( a picture of a boxer from the internet), but I assume bruising and black eyes might have been a deterrent for the Buckman tough guys, not to mention plowing and planting that spring....
