This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

St Cloud's Whitney Memorial Airport

There's a blog online that I highly recommend--TYWKIWDBI (or Things You Wouldn't Know If We Didn't Blog Intermittently ☺)--written by a very interesting, erudite Minnesota expat.  He grew up here but writes and comments from Wisconsin, so he has a fairly reasonable (homesick) view of the land of 10,000 lakes.
A subject highlighted on TYWKIWDBI is a more than passing interest in WPA/CCC projects in this part of the world.  Here's his post from last summer on Gooseberry Falls State Park .  Wow, huh?  You've been to Gooseberry Falls maybe 5-6 times in your life and never paid much attention to the amazing stonework there, right?  Well, here's the St Cloud equivalent, which for some of us is a daily drive-by.  It's the entrance to the old airport north of the St Cloud hospital, but it's built into Northway Drive now.  (The original hangar became the Whitney Senior Center, a well used space these days).
This is an air photo of the airport entrance from 1951, part of this map.  I added green lines where the stone work was/is ☺.

See the low wall mid left of the above pic, and the wall below plus the one in the distance there, see?  (Enlarge it).  I'm proud of St Cloud for preserving those three spans of history, as well as the Arch wall and one pillar.
