JOOOOM! Cars

Have you noticed how many different vehicle types and brands are on the road today?  Dad used to be able to tell at a glance if a car was a Ford, Chevy or  Plymouth...most guys could, remember?...but not now.  I heard the other day that there are more than 500 different brands and models, but wait:  googling  the subject found a "car encyclopedia" website--"Our car database, developed since 1991, includes more than 10,000 car brands and 50,000 models".  Okay, then.

Nowadays, as we page thru copies of the old Little Falls Herald, Pierz Journal,  Bemidji and Minneapolis papers, we're finding ads for cars that didn't make it in the long run. (Ok, some of these did, but lots didn't). It wasn't just the Pandolfo...check these out:

(These ads were from 1906 to 1919 or so...the Bemidji and Mpls papers did an "Auto Section" early on, so some of these ads appeared on the same page as others).

  1. REO stands for Ransom E. Olds. Yes the founder of what would become the Oldsmobile company. Ransom had just sold this company and used REO cuz he couldn't use Olds again without causing confusion.

  2. Interesting! The "Motor Inn" in Little Falls did a lot of Reo advertizing in those years. They probably just started selling Oldsmobiles as the Co developed. I wonder about the demise of the Saxon and the White, the Auburn and the Franklin and the others...they looked just as possible.
