This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Ellis Island Virtual Tour

Both sides of our family arrived in America well before Ellis Island opened for business, but it's still an amazing and historic place to visit for any American.  Here's a panoramic website tour from the National Park Service to give you a feel for the 12 million immigrants who arrived in NYC between 1892 and 1954.
(Also, dad's uncles Math and Ted left New York and arrived back home here in 1914).

  1. Almost makes a feller want to visit Ellis Island, huh? Particularly if that feller had a niece in New York or something. Just say when...

  2. Almost. After our experience with that garish chapel at the Vatican, I figger virtual tours are much better--less crowded and WAY less hassle. ☺

  4. If memory serves...and, admittedly this is assuming quite a bit... when Math and Theo were returning from their European adventure... wasn't there a snag at Ellis Island that led to them being detained for a bit? It must not have been much of a prob as Math sort of mentions it in passing... but there might be record of it at Ellis dot dot dot
