This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

According to Hoyle

Remember all the aunts and uncles gathered around the table when we were kids?  It was often a Saturday night, and the dining room table had all the leaves in it.  There were beer bottles and ashtrays and CARDS.  My favorite story has to do with the night dad kept loosing--it was probably early in the years they lived in Rice.  As always, they were playing Rap Poker (when you thought you had a good hand, you'd rap HARD on the table, to signal one more round for everybody else).  (The best raps were like gunshots).  This particular evening, everyone seemed to be laughing more than usual, and dad was loosing game after game.  As the oldest of them, he figured he deserved some respect...but the situation was baffling--what were the dummköpfe laughing at??

Turned out they could all see dad's hand in the glass patio doors right behind him.

The memory STILL makes me laugh!

This particular day, Aunt Idella was sitting in the 'reflective' chair...and yeah, it's two photos poorly combined, but you get the idea.  After that night, dad usually sat on the near end of the table to play cards...
