This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

The Mueller Brothers

In the first years of the 1900s in Buckman, Minnesota, new businesses were popping up like crazy.  We've explored a few of them here on Hesch History, and sometimes, we go back and look again:
(Photos enlarge with a click, ok?)

The top photo is the John Hesch Drygoods Store in about 1916.  On the left is John (in the wheelchair) with son Paul and daughter Laura.  Behind the counter on the right is Ket (Mueller) Hesch who we think might have been pregnant with Johnny Boy here.

Our question tho is WHO was the man in the middle?  The story I got with the picture was that he was a local guy who just wanted to be in the picture.  Hmm--ok, but Larry made a case for the gentleman being Ket's brother John Mueller.  Comparing the other pics we have of him, I think he's right.                           The mystery man has light eyes, and so does Ket.  His stance is familiar from the exterior photo of the saloon and hardware store, and from the fact that Ket stands that way, too.

What do you think?  Same guy?

  1. I think it looks to be the same guy. The body build is correct, and the posture he seems to favor.

I would be surprised if it was not.
