This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

Photo overload!

I went to visit Fran, a long-time friend and probable relative this last Saturday.  We were both members of Sweet Adelines in the 90s, and we both have Buckman roots: her father, John, was Killian Zenner's brother.  While we may not be blood relatives, the connections by marriage, history and proximity are definitely there ☺.
'Course, we talked music, and Fran mentioned that her dad sang around Buckman as part of a quartet, and that she had a picture of them in a book.  Well, WOW!
The book turned out to be one of three she inherited from John (who died in 1979). They're Pictorial Atlases of Morrison County, Minnesota from 1970, 1978 and 1988 (so maybe the '88 book came from somewhere else).  They're large, heavy, spiral-bound books chuck fulla photos--YAY!!  Evidently, people were encouraged to submit old family pictures as well as current ones. They're arranged in each volume by township and labeled by family name.
YES, bless her heart, she let me borrow them.
Let's start with her family:
Roman Dehler, John Zenner, Victor Kapsner, and Kilian Zenner.
These four men were related to each other like this:  John and Kilian were brothers while Roman and Victor were their nephews (Margaret Zenner Dehler and Barbara Zenner Kapsner).
(Aside: Margaret will be the subject of another post, for sure.  Her children married locals and together they peopled a good part of the Buckman area--she died with 87 grandkids and 42 great-grandkids).
Terry, Adela, Kilian, Galen,
Kathleen and Mary Lou Zenner
(possibly at Galens wedding to Patricia Rosen, in 1961)
Oh, yes, not to worry, there'll be MANY MORE photos
from those books posted here.
THANK YOU, FRAN ☺ !

  1. good to see Galen Zenner--he was such a cool guy and I never understood he was related to Mom until much later. I was their babysitter a long time, and now see what a service it was to parents of four close-together kids!
