This branch of the Austrian Hesch family is descended from Johann Hesch and his wife Marya (Schlinz) Hesch, who came to America from Oberschlagles, Bohemia with three sons: Paul, Mathias, and Anton. +++Johann & Marya settled in Buffalo County, Wisconsin but moved to Pierz, Mn in about 1885. .+++Mathias settled in Waumandee, Wisconsin and moved to Pierz in 1911. +++Anton never married but farmed with his dad in Agram Township, where he died in 1911.+++And Paul, my great grandfather, settled five miles away, in Buckman, Minnesota. He died there in 1900.

The Brixius Family

(YAY--first snow here this morning☺  BTW, this is the 1000th HH post!)

Here's another family photo from the Morrison Co Atlases.  The name's familiar cuz mom mentioned them as friends of hers, and I think their land abutted the Janson land, too.
Anyway, Larry and I started checking censuses and found that the Brixius family came from Luxembourg, like the Sand family did.  (Which explains a name that doesn't sound very German, ya know?)

Turns out John Brixius and Helen Hanson were born in Stearns co, in Jacobs Prairie.  Ok, so I looked for that family which, yes, would have been counted as part of Rockville:

There's John as a 2 year old...and his older brother Christopher, who happened to spring for a write up in Mitchell's History of Stearns Co.  Thanks, Christ!  Larry found the photo on Ancestry, I believe.  You can actually see the resemblance between the brothers, can't you?
The photo at the top is from 1938, but the 1940 census only showed 2 of the kids still at home, so here they are in 1930 with only one missing.
If a Brixius descendant happens by and wants to add to this, let me know.   Blogs are great for changing later if need be!

  1. My grandfather was Christopher's youngest brother, Michael Brixius. Michael married Agnes Geiser and ran a small store in Watkins called Brixius Market for many years, and my dad ran it after that until the late 90's. I would be very interested in learning anything else you might know about the family. Thanks for your blog!

  2. Hi, Ginnysmom ☺! I always wondered about the name Brixius because it was so non-German sounding, and yet they were a family in Buckman. I was tickled to find they were from Luxembourg because then my grandma's family had familiar folks around...but I know very little about them.
If you're interested in more info about Luxembourger immigrants, there's a great website: http://luxembourgamericanfamilies.org/surnames.php
and also, to find more about them in particular, try "Chronicling America" on the online version of the Library of Congress--it's old newspapers that can be searched by name, date, etc
